Cabinet Questions People Actually Ask Us
(And Our Honest Answers)

When it comes to cabinetry, people have questions.
Some are straightforward. Some are surprisingly complicated. And some make us wonder what exactly AI has been telling everyone.
At Twin River Cabinets, we work with homeowners, remodelers, and builders throughout the Twin Cities, and we've learned that no two cabinetry projects—or conversations—are exactly alike.
So we're answering some common questions about custom cabinets, semi-custom options, pricing, timelines, and what's actually possible.
We'll keep the answers helpful. The hint of sarcasm? We'll try to keep that under control.
Do You Only Make Kitchen Cabinets?
Nope. Kitchens are just the beginning!
When people think about cabinetry, kitchens usually come to mind first. But cabinets can serve a purpose in almost any room of the house.
We build custom cabinetry for spaces including:
- Bathrooms and vanities
- Laundry rooms and mudrooms
- Home offices and built-ins
- Basements and entertainment centers
- Home bars and beverage stations
- Bedrooms and storage areas
- Garages and other specialty spaces
The possibilities depend on the space, the intended use, and the type of cabinetry you choose.
For example, a laundry room might need storage for cleaning supplies and a countertop for folding clothes. A home office might call for custom-sized cabinets that fit an existing wall. A basement bar may need cabinetry that accommodates a beverage refrigerator and other equipment.
The point is, cabinetry isn't limited to the kitchen!
Although we do recommend having a plan before installing cabinets in the middle of your living room.
Do Custom Cabinets Take Forever?
Forever? That's a little dramatic.
Custom cabinetry takes time because it's manufactured specifically for your project rather than pulled from a warehouse of standard cabinet sizes. With our custom collections, the process involves determining cabinet specifications, selecting materials and finishes, preparing the order, and manufacturing the cabinetry.
Lead times can vary depending on the scope of the project, the materials selected, finishing requirements, and our production schedule. That's why it's important to discuss your project timeline early, particularly if you're coordinating with a remodeler, contractor, or other trades.
But what if you need cabinetry sooner?
Our Summit by TRC semi-custom collection typically offers lead times of approximately 5–7 business days from order to delivery, depending on product availability and order details.
Custom cabinetry and semi-custom cabinetry serve different needs. The right choice often comes down to how much customization your project requires and how quickly you need the cabinets.
Good things take time. So does your oddly specific 37.25-inch cabinet.
Can You Match This Cabinet Picture I Found Online?
First, we need to establish whether the picture is lying to us.
Pinterest, Instagram, AI and other online platforms are great places to find cabinet inspiration.
They're also full of professional photography, edited images, carefully staged rooms, and increasingly, AI-generated spaces that may not exist in real life.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't bring inspiration photos. We actually encourage it!
Pictures can help communicate the cabinet styles, finishes, colors, door profiles, and details you're interested in.
But there's a difference between recreating a particular cabinet feature and duplicating an entire room exactly as it appears in a photograph.
Your space may have different dimensions, ceiling heights, appliances, windows, plumbing locations, or other limitations.
Lighting also plays a role. A cabinet finish that looks warm and creamy in a photograph may appear cooler or darker in your home.
When you share an inspiration photo with us, we can discuss the cabinetry details, identify what's achievable, and determine which of our collections may be appropriate for your project.
Sometimes the inspiration is completely doable.
Other times, the photograph has taken a few creative liberties.
Pinterest. AI. Filters. Camera angles. We have trust issues.
Can Custom Cabinets Work in an Awkward Space?
Oh, we love a weird space.
Not every home has perfectly square walls, convenient dimensions, or spaces that neatly accommodate standard cabinet sizes.
That's one of the reasons custom cabinetry exists!
Maybe you have an unusually narrow opening, a difficult corner, an oddly sized wall, or an area where standard cabinets would leave too much unused space.
Custom cabinetry allows for greater flexibility in cabinet dimensions and configurations.
Depending on the project, that might mean adjusting cabinet widths, depths, heights, or storage features to better fit the available space.
There are still practical limitations, of course. Cabinet doors and drawers need enough clearance to operate, and existing walls, appliances, and other building conditions must be considered. But unusual dimensions don't automatically mean a space is unusable.
With accurate measurements and the right cabinetry specifications, an awkward area may become much more functional.
Insert muscle flex here.
Are Custom Cabinets Expensive?
Define expensive.
More than a toaster? Yes.
More than a yacht? Usually not.
We say "usually" because we haven't actually priced yachts.
The cost of cabinetry depends on several factors, including construction, materials, finishes, cabinet dimensions, storage features, and the overall scope of the project.
For example, a relatively straightforward run of cabinets will have different requirements than an entire home filled with specialty cabinetry and customized storage.
Wood species and finish selections also influence pricing. Premium materials and more involved construction details can increase the cost.
That's why comparing cabinetry based solely on the number of cabinets—or the total price—doesn't always tell the whole story.
At Twin River Cabinets, we offer several collections to accommodate different project priorities:
- Casa Collection: Locally built custom cabinetry focused on painted finishes and color flexibility.
- Signature Collection: Locally built custom cabinetry with a wide range of wood species, finishes, and styles.
- Luxe Collection: Premium custom cabinetry featuring elevated materials such as White Oak and Walnut.
- Summit by TRC: Semi-custom cabinetry with curated styles and finishes, faster lead times, and a different price point from many fully custom projects.
The goal isn't to make every customer purchase the most expensive cabinetry available.
It's to help determine which collection makes sense for the project and its budget.
What If I Don't Need Fully Custom Cabinets?
Then don't buy fully custom. Seriously!
Not every cabinetry project requires completely custom dimensions, specialty construction, or an extensive range of finish options. Sometimes standard cabinet sizes and a curated selection of door styles and finishes are exactly what the project needs.
That's where semi-custom cabinetry can be a smart choice.
Summit by TRC offers a selection of cabinet styles and finishes, with typical delivery timelines of approximately 5–7 business days after ordering.
It's worth understanding that semi-custom cabinetry has more limitations than fully custom cabinetry. Available sizes, configurations, and finishes are determined by the collection rather than manufactured entirely to your specifications.
But if those options work for your project, there's no reason to pay for customization you don't need.
We offer both custom and semi-custom cabinetry because different projects call for different solutions.
Although if you leave it up to us, we could talk about beautiful Walnut cabinets all day.
Will You Tell Me If My Cabinet Idea Won't Work?
Yes. Even if AI swears it will.
AI-generated room images can be impressive!
They can also feature drawers that couldn't possibly open, cabinets that interfere with appliances, or layouts that ignore basic construction requirements.
Real cabinetry has to work in a real space.
That means accounting for measurements, door swings, drawer clearances, appliances, plumbing, and the surrounding construction.
The same considerations apply to inspiration photos, sketches, and ideas that aren't AI-generated.
If a requested cabinet size, feature, or configuration isn't practical, we'll explain the concern and discuss possible cabinetry alternatives. Sometimes a small adjustment makes an idea workable. Other times, a different cabinet configuration or collection may be a better fit.
We're a cabinet manufacturer and supplier, not a full-service interior design or remodeling company. But we can absolutely share our experience with cabinetry construction, specifications, and functionality.
A beautiful cabinet is great.
A beautiful cabinet you can actually open and use? Even better.
Unfortunately, gravity and physics refuse to negotiate.
Do I Need to Know Exactly What I Want Before Contacting You?
Not at all.
Some customers come to us with detailed plans, measurements, cabinet specifications, and a clear idea of their preferred materials.
Others are just beginning to explore their options.
Both are perfectly fine!
You might already know you want painted cabinets. Maybe you prefer natural wood. Perhaps you're primarily concerned about storage, cost, or how quickly the cabinetry can be delivered.
That's enough to begin a conversation.
If you're starting from scratch, some helpful information to gather includes:
- Photos of the existing space
- Approximate measurements or a floor plan
- Inspiration photos showing cabinet styles or finishes you like
- Any specific storage needs or cabinet features
- Your general budget and project timeline
You don't need every detail figured out before reaching out.
We can review the information you provide, discuss our cabinet collections, and help you understand what information is needed to prepare a preliminary cabinetry estimate.
For custom projects, final measurements and specifications are verified before production.
“Anything but what I have now” is also an acceptable starting point.
The Question That Matters Most: Which Cabinets Make Sense for My Project?
There isn't one cabinet collection that's automatically right for every home, every budget, or every timeline.
Some projects benefit from the flexibility of locally manufactured custom cabinetry. Others are well suited to semi-custom options with more standardized specifications and faster availability.
The important thing is understanding the differences before making a decision.
Think about what matters most to your project.
Is it a specific wood species? A custom paint color? Unusual cabinet dimensions? Specialized storage? A shorter lead time? Staying within a particular budget?
Those priorities help determine which type of cabinetry is worth considering.
And if you're not sure yet, that's okay too!
Cabinetry is a significant part of many home improvement projects. Asking questions early can help you avoid misunderstandings, unexpected limitations, and unnecessary expenses later.
