Custom vs. Semi-Custom Cabinets: What’s the Difference?

If you’re shopping for new cabinets, you’ll probably come across terms like stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinetry pretty quickly. But what do those terms actually mean, and does choosing custom cabinets automatically mean you’re getting something better?
Not necessarily.
The biggest difference between custom and semi-custom cabinets is flexibility. Custom cabinetry is built specifically for your project, giving you much more freedom with sizing, materials, finishes, and design. Semi-custom cabinetry works within an established cabinet system, offering fewer modifications but often providing a more budget-friendly price and faster turnaround.
At Twin River Cabinets, we offer both! Our Casa, Signature, and Luxe Collections are custom built in our White Bear Lake, Minnesota shop, while Summit by TRC gives homeowners a semi-custom cabinet option.
Here’s how the two compare and, more importantly, how to decide which one actually makes sense for your home.
What Are Custom Cabinets?
Custom cabinets are designed and built specifically for an individual project rather than selected from predetermined cabinet sizes.
At TRC, our Casa, Signature, and Luxe custom collections use frameless construction and allow us to adjust cabinet dimensions and configurations around the room.
That flexibility can make a big difference when you're working with unusual dimensions, trying to maximize every inch of storage, designing cabinetry around specific appliances, or creating something that simply isn't available in a standard cabinet catalog.
Custom cabinetry also gives homeowners considerably more freedom with materials and finishes.
- Casa focuses on custom painted cabinetry with custom color matching available.
- Signature offers multiple hardwood species, stains, painted options, and door styles.
- Luxe features premium woods including White Oak and Walnut.
What Are Semi-Custom Cabinets?
Semi-custom cabinets are manufactured within an established system of cabinet sizes, styles, finishes, and configurations.
That doesn't mean every semi-custom kitchen looks the same!
There is still plenty of flexibility to create a beautiful, functional kitchen. The main difference is that the design works within the options available from that particular cabinet line rather than having every cabinet built specifically for the project.
For many spaecs, standard cabinet sizing works perfectly well. In those cases, paying for complete customization may not provide enough benefit to justify the additional investment.
- Summit by TRC is our semi-custom framed cabinetry collection. It offers a curated selection of door styles and finishes, quality construction, and a much faster typical turnaround than our locally built custom cabinetry.
What Is the Difference Between Custom and Semi-Custom Cabinets?
The easiest way to understand the difference is to look at the areas where customization actually affects the project.
Sizing and Layout Flexibility
Custom cabinetry gives us the greatest flexibility with cabinet dimensions.
Instead of filling an extra few inches with a filler strip because the next available cabinet size won't fit, we can often build the cabinet to better use that space. This is especially helpful in older homes, unusual layouts, built-ins, or rooms where maximizing storage is important.
Semi-custom cabinetry uses predetermined sizes. A good cabinet design can still make excellent use of the room, but fillers or other adjustments may sometimes be necessary to make the available cabinet sizes work within the space.
Materials, Door Styles, and Finishes
Custom cabinetry provides considerably more freedom when selecting materials and finishes.
TRC's custom collections include painted cabinetry with custom color matching, multiple hardwood species, stain options, various door styles, and premium woods such as White Oak and Walnut.
Summit keeps the process more streamlined with a curated selection of available styles and finishes.
Neither approach is inherently better. Some homeowners love having nearly unlimited choices. Others would much rather choose from a smaller collection of carefully selected options!
Cabinet Construction
There is a construction difference between our specific collections.
- TRC's Casa, Signature, and Luxe custom cabinets use frameless construction.
- Summit by TRC uses framed construction.
Frameless cabinets don't have a face frame around the front of the cabinet box, creating clean lines and allowing more direct access to the cabinet interior.
Framed cabinets have a structural frame attached to the front of the cabinet box and are a very common cabinetry construction method.
Lead Time
Lead time can be an important factor when choosing cabinetry. Because our custom cabinets are built specifically for each project in our White Bear Lake shop, production time depends on our current schedule and the scope of the project.
Summit cabinetry typically has a much faster turnaround, often around 5–7 business days once the order is placed. That can make it particularly appealing for projects with tighter schedules.
Installation
Installation is another important difference within TRC's current offerings.
Professional installation by Twin River Cabinets is available with our Casa, Signature, and Luxe custom cabinetry projects.
At this time, installation is not included with Summit by TRC.
That's worth considering when comparing the overall scope and cost of each option rather than looking at cabinet pricing alone.
Are Custom Cabinets Better Than Semi-Custom Cabinets?
Not automatically. This is probably the most important misconception to clear up.
A well-designed semi-custom kitchen can be a much smarter investment than custom cabinetry if the available sizes, styles, and finishes already meet your needs.
On the other hand, custom cabinetry becomes incredibly valuable when standard sizing creates wasted space, the room has unusual dimensions, you want a specific material or color, or your design requires something that isn't available within a semi-custom system.
The better cabinet isn't necessarily the more expensive one. It's the one that solves your particular project well.
Are Semi-Custom Cabinets Less Expensive Than Custom Cabinets?
Generally, yes.
Semi-custom cabinetry is typically more budget-friendly because cabinets are produced within an established manufacturing system rather than individually designed and built from the ground up. But cabinet price depends on much more than the label “custom” or “semi-custom.” The size of the kitchen, number of cabinets, finishes, accessories, modifications, installation, and other project details all affect the final investment.
When comparing cabinet quotes, make sure you understand what's actually included.
Which Type of Cabinet Is Right for Your Home?
Custom cabinetry may make the most sense if:
- You have unusual room dimensions or architectural challenges.
- You want to maximize available space.
- You want a specific paint color, wood species, or finish.
- Your design requires specialized sizing or cabinetry.
- You want cabinetry designed specifically around your home.
Semi-custom cabinetry may make more sense if:
- Standard cabinet sizes work well in your space.
- You like the available door styles and finishes.
- Keeping cabinetry costs lower is an important priority.
- You need cabinetry on a shorter timeline.
- You don't need extensive customization.
Frequently Asked Questions About Custom vs. Semi-Custom Cabinets
Does Twin River Cabinets offer both custom and semi-custom cabinets?
Yes. Casa, Signature, and Luxe are our locally built custom cabinetry collections. Summit by TRC is our semi-custom cabinetry collection.
Where are TRC's custom cabinets made?
Our Casa, Signature, and Luxe cabinetry is built in our shop in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
Can semi-custom cabinets still create a high-end kitchen?
Absolutely. Cabinet category alone doesn't determine whether a finished kitchen looks beautiful or feels well designed. A thoughtful layout, appropriate materials, good proportions, and careful selections can make a significant difference regardless of whether the cabinets are custom or semi-custom.
Do custom cabinets give you more storage?
They can. Because custom cabinet dimensions can be adjusted to the space, there are situations where we can capture inches that might otherwise require fillers or go unused. Whether that makes a meaningful difference depends on the specific kitchen.
Can TRC help me decide which option I need?
Yes! You don't need to decide between custom and semi-custom cabinets before contacting us. Once we understand your space, design goals, budget, and timeline, we can help you determine which collection makes the most sense.
Custom or Semi-Custom? Start With the Project
If you're trying to decide between custom and semi-custom cabinets, don't start by asking which one is better.
Start with your home. What does the space require? How much flexibility do you need? Which materials and finishes do you love? What's your budget? How quickly do you need the cabinetry?
Those answers matter much more than the label on the cabinet.
At Twin River Cabinets, offering both custom and semi-custom cabinetry allows us to look at the project first and recommend an option based on what actually makes sense.
Sometimes that's cabinetry built specifically for the room.
Sometimes it isn't.
And that's exactly why having both options matters!
