What We Believe About Good Cabinetry
After years of designing, building, and installing cabinetry throughout Minnesota and the Twin Cities area, we've learned that the best cabinet projects aren't necessarily the ones with the trendiest color, most expensive wood, or longest list of upgrades.
They're the ones that fit the home and the people who live there.
At Twin River Cabinets, we build custom cabinetry in our White Bear Lake shop and also offer semi-custom and cabinet door replacement options for projects that don't require fully custom cabinetry. That gives us a unique perspective: there isn't one type of cabinet that's right for every home.
These are some of the principles that guide the way we approach cabinetry and the recommendations we make to our customers.
1. Cabinetry Should Be Designed Around Real Life
A kitchen can photograph beautifully and still be frustrating to use.
Before thinking about door styles and colors, we want to understand how a household actually uses the space.
Where do groceries get unloaded? Where does clutter collect? Who cooks? Do multiple people use the kitchen at once? Which appliances stay on the countertop? What frustrates you about the current layout?
Those details can influence everything from drawer placement and cabinet sizes to pantry storage and appliance locations.
For one household, the answer might be oversized drawers for cookware. For another, it's hidden trash and recycling, an appliance garage, pantry organization, or a place for everything that currently ends up on the counter.
Good cabinetry shouldn't make you adapt to it. It should make everyday life easier.
2. More Storage Isn't Always Better Storage
One of the most common goals we hear is, “I need more storage.”
Sometimes you do. But often, the real problem isn't the amount of storage. It's that the existing storage doesn't work very well.
A deep cabinet where everything gets lost isn't necessarily more useful than a thoughtfully designed drawer. An oversized pantry isn't particularly helpful if half of it is difficult to reach.
That's why we think about usable storage, not simply how many cabinets can fit into a room.
Pull-outs, deep drawers, tray dividers, pantry organization, appliance storage, and cabinetry designed around specific household needs can sometimes improve functionality without increasing the room's footprint at all.
3. Materials Should Be Chosen for a Reason
There isn't one cabinet material that's automatically “best.” The right material depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
For our Casa Collection, we use paint-grade MDF because its smooth surface is well suited for the consistent painted finish Casa is designed around.
Our Signature Collection is primarily hardwood cabinetry, offering Alder, Maple, Red Oak, Cherry, and Hickory for homeowners who want the grain, warmth, and natural character of real wood.
Our Luxe Collection focuses specifically on premium Walnut and White Oak.
And our Summit by TRC semi-custom collection uses framed birch cabinetry with a curated selection of painted, stained, and glazed finishes.
Different materials and construction methods serve different purposes. We would rather help someone understand those differences than tell them one buzzword automatically means “better.”

4. Custom Isn't Automatically the Right Answer
We build custom cabinetry. We believe deeply in its value.
But that doesn't mean every project needs it.
Our Casa, Signature, and Luxe collections are built locally at our White Bear Lake shop and allow greater flexibility in sizing, materials, finishes, and project-specific details.
For a kitchen with unusual dimensions, highly specific storage needs, a particular hardwood or custom color, or cabinetry that needs to integrate closely with the architecture of the home, that flexibility can be extremely valuable.
But some projects work perfectly well within established cabinet sizes and a curated selection of finishes. That's why we also offer Summit by TRC, our semi-custom collection.
And sometimes the existing cabinet boxes are still perfectly functional and the homeowner simply wants a different look. That's where Revive by TRC replacement doors and drawer fronts may make more sense.
We don't believe homeowners should pay for customization they don't need.
The best cabinetry isn't necessarily the most expensive option. It's the option that makes sense for the project.

5. The Parts You Don't Notice at First Matter
Cabinet doors and finishes naturally get most of the attention in a showroom.
But some of the things you'll appreciate most over the years aren't necessarily the things that catch your eye first.
Drawer construction matters.
Hardware matters.
How smoothly a drawer operates matters.
How cabinetry is constructed and assembled matters.
Our Casa, Signature, and Luxe custom collections use 3/4-inch plywood drawer boxes, including the drawer bottoms, and soft-close hinges and drawer slides are standard.
Those details aren't as exciting as choosing a beautiful White Oak finish or the perfect paint color, but you'll interact with them every single day.
Quality cabinetry should still feel good to use long after the excitement of the remodel has worn off.
6. Good Design Doesn't Have to Announce Itself
Some of the best cabinet design is almost invisible.
You walk into the room and it simply feels right.
The proportions make sense. Doors and drawers open comfortably. Appliances fit naturally into the layout. Storage is located where you need it. The cabinetry relates to the architecture of the home rather than fighting against it.
That doesn't mean a kitchen can't make a statement. A Walnut island, dramatic painted cabinetry, custom hood, or beautiful built-in can absolutely become a focal point. But good design isn't about adding details simply because you can.
Sometimes restraint is the better design decision.
7. Trends Are Inspiration, Not Instructions
Cabinet trends change constantly.
One year everyone wants white kitchens. Then it's green. Then White Oak. Then warm stains. Then painted cabinetry is supposedly “out,” only to return again.
We pay attention to trends because they can introduce homeowners to new ideas, but we don't think they should make the final decision.
Cabinetry is too significant an investment to choose solely because something is popular online right now.
Instead, we look at the home itself, its architecture, the surrounding materials, the homeowner's personal style, and how long they plan to live with the space. If the current trend happens to fit all of those things, wonderful. If it doesn't, we'd rather help you create something you'll still love when the internet has moved on.

8. Installation Is Part of Cabinet Quality
Beautiful cabinetry can still look wrong if it isn't installed properly. Walls aren't always straight. Floors aren't always level. Corners aren't always square—especially in existing homes.
Installation requires working through those realities while maintaining proper alignment, spacing, door and drawer operation, appliance clearances, crown molding, fillers, and other finishing details.
Twin River Cabinets installs our custom Casa, Signature, and Luxe cabinetry because we view installation as part of the overall custom cabinet process, not simply what happens after the cabinets arrive.
The details at the end of a project can have an enormous effect on how the finished cabinetry looks and feels.
9. Communication Is Part of a Good Cabinet Project
Cabinet projects have a lot of moving pieces. Measurements, layouts, appliances, finishes, hardware, countertops, construction schedules, installation, and decisions involving other trades all have to come together.
We've learned that clear expectations and communication are just as important as the cabinetry itself.
Questions are good. Changes are much easier to address when they're discussed early, and homeowners should understand what they're buying, what's included, what decisions still need to be made, and what happens next.
A successful project isn't only about the finished cabinets. The process of getting there matters too.
10. Good Cabinetry Should Feel Like It Belongs There
This may be the belief that ties everything else together. Cabinetry should feel like it belongs in the home.
Not like it was copied from a Pinterest photo. Not like every possible trend was squeezed into one room. And not like the homeowner had to compromise the way they live to accommodate the cabinets.
It should fit the architecture, the space, the budget, and the people using it.
Sometimes that means fully custom cabinetry built specifically for the room.
Sometimes it means semi-custom cabinetry.
Sometimes it means keeping perfectly good cabinet boxes and replacing the doors.
There isn't one right answer for every home—and we don't think there should be.
