Choosing a cabinet color can be one of the most fun parts of a project—and one of the most frustrating!

You find the perfect white, green, blue, greige, and you love it on the sample. Then you bring it into your space and think, Wait. Is this even the same color?

It probably is.

The difference may be the light.

Natural light, artificial lighting, the direction your room faces, and even the time of day can change the way a painted cabinet color looks. Add flooring, countertops, wall colors, tile, and other finishes, and a color can look surprisingly different from one space to another.

That's why there really isn't one "perfect white" or one cabinet color that works everywhere.

Before choosing a color for your painted cabinetry, here are a few things worth paying attention to.

Start With the Natural Light in Your Room

First, look at where your natural light is coming from.

If you aren't sure which direction your room faces, open the compass on your phone and check the direction of the room's primary windows. It sounds like a tiny detail, but it can explain a lot about why a color looks different in your home than it did somewhere else.

North-Facing Rooms

North-facing rooms typically have softer, cooler natural light.

That cooler light can make gray, blue, and green undertones more noticeable. Whites can also appear cooler than expected.

This doesn't mean you can't choose a cool color for a north-facing room. It simply means you should pay attention to those undertones before committing.

If you're considering white cabinetry, this is a great place to compare colors rather than looking at one white by itself. Put something like Pure White SW 7005 next to the warmer Alabaster SW 7008 and see what happens in your room.

You may immediately prefer one over the other.

South-Facing Rooms

That warmth can bring out the warmer undertones in your cabinet color. A creamy white may look creamier. A warm neutral may feel warmer. Even greens, blues, and grays can change depending on how much sunlight reaches the cabinetry.

Again, there's no rule saying a south-facing room needs a certain type of color. The important thing is recognizing that the warmth you're seeing isn't coming from the paint color alone—the light is contributing to it.

East-Facing Rooms

East-facing rooms can be a little trickier because their light changes noticeably throughout the day.

You'll typically get warmer, brighter light in the morning, followed by cooler, less direct light later in the day.

So if you fall in love with a cabinet color at 9 a.m., look at it again at 3 p.m.

And then again after dark.

You might be surprised by how different it looks.

West-Facing Rooms

West-facing rooms do almost the opposite.

They generally start with cooler light and become warmer and brighter later in the day as the afternoon and evening sun comes through.

This is another situation where we'd never recommend judging a cabinet color based on one quick look at a sample.

Leave it in the room for a while. See what happens to it throughout the day.

What If There Isn't Much Natural Light?

Not every cabinet project involves a bright room full of windows.

Think basement bars, laundry rooms, bathrooms, offices, entertainment centers, mudrooms, built-ins, and other spaces that may have limited natural light—or none at all.

In those rooms, artificial lighting becomes even more important.

You've probably noticed this without even thinking about cabinetry. Some light bulbs create a warm, almost yellow glow. Others produce a much cooler, whiter light.

Your cabinet color is going to react to that light, too.

If you're planning cabinetry for a room with limited natural light, consider the lighting that will actually be used in the finished space. If you change the color temperature of the bulbs later, don't be surprised if the cabinetry suddenly looks a little different.

White Is Never Just "White"

If you've ever started looking at white paint colors, you already know where this is going.

There are a lot of whites!

Some are warm. Some are cool. Some lean creamy. Some have gray undertones. And sometimes you don't notice any of that until you put two whites next to each other.

For example, compare Pure White SW 7005, Alabaster SW 7008, and Snowbound SW 7004.

At first glance, you're looking at three whites.

Put them next to each other in the actual room, though, and the differences become much easier to see.

Then move those same samples into another room and they may look different again .

That's why we wouldn't tell someone, "This is the best white for cabinets." There are too many other factors involved.

The better question is: Which white looks best with the light and other finishes in your space?

You Don't Have to Choose White

Painted cabinetry opens the door to a lot more than white! Maybe you're drawn to a soft, muted green like Evergreen Fog SW 9130. Maybe you want something deep and dramatic like Naval SW 6244 or Iron Ore SW 7069 . Or maybe a warm neutral like Accessible Beige SW 7036 feels more like you.

The point is that every one of those colors will be affected by its surroundings.

A green may look more gray in one room and more obviously green in another. A dark color may feel rich and dramatic in a bright room but considerably darker in a space with limited light.

Don't choose based solely on how beautiful the color looks online. Bring it home and see.

Don't Forget Everything Around the Cabinets

Light is a big part of choosing a cabinet color, but it isn't the only thing affecting what you see.

Your cabinetry has neighbors. Flooring, countertops, tile, wall color, wood tones, furniture, appliances, and even nearby cabinetry can change the way your eye perceives a color.

This becomes especially noticeable with undertones.

A white that looked perfectly neutral by itself might suddenly look warmer next to a cool countertop. A greige may reveal more gray beside warm wood flooring. A green may look completely different once your backsplash is next to it.

Whenever possible, look at your cabinet color with the other materials you're actually planning to use.

The Best Thing You Can Do? Live With the Sample for a Little While.

This may be the simplest advice: Don't rush the sample.

Take it into the room where the cabinetry will actually be installed.

Look at it in the morning. Look at it in the afternoon.

Turn the lights on. Look at it after dark.

Hold it next to your flooring, countertop, tile, or other finishes. Move it to different areas of the room if cabinetry will be installed in more than one location.

If you still love it after seeing it under all those different conditions? That's a much better indication that you've found your color than how it looked on your phone or under showroom lighting.

Frameless cabinets don't have a face frame around the front of the cabinet box, creating clean lines and allowing more direct access to the cabinet interior.

Framed cabinets have a structural frame attached to the front of the cabinet box and are a very common cabinetry construction method.

Lead Time

Lead time can be an important factor when choosing cabinetry. Because our custom cabinets are built specifically for each project in our White Bear Lake shop, production time depends on our current schedule and the scope of the project.

Summit cabinetry typically has a much faster turnaround, often around 5–7 business days once the order is placed. That can make it particularly appealing for projects with tighter schedules.

Installation

Installation is another important difference within TRC's current offerings.

MDF vs. Wood Cabinets: Which Is Better for Painted Cabinetry?

If you're choosing painted cabinetry, you may assume that solid wood is automatically the better material.

It sounds logical. Real wood is often associated with quality, while MDF sometimes gets lumped together with inexpensive particleboard or lower-quality cabinetry.

But when we're talking specifically about painted cabinetry , it's not that simple.

At Twin River Cabinets, our Casa Collection is intentionally built as paint-grade MDF cabinetry , while our Signature Collection offers painted hardwood as well as custom MDF door options. We aren't substituting MDF for a material we'd rather use. For a smooth painted finish, MDF has some very real advantages.

The answer depends on what matters most to you.

First, What Is MDF?

MDF stands for medium-density fiberboard . Unlike natural hardwood, it doesn't have knots, grain patterns or the natural variation you'd see in Maple, Cherry, Oak or Walnut.

And for painted cabinetry, that's actually part of the appeal.

Paint is meant to create a smooth, consistent surface rather than showcase natural wood grain. Starting with a smooth paint-grade material allows the door style and paint color to become the focus.

That's exactly what Casa is designed to do!

A Smooth, Consistent Painted Finish

Without prominent grain underneath, MDF provides a smooth foundation for paint.

That's especially appealing with colors where you want a clean, consistent appearance across doors and drawer fronts.

Casa is specifically designed around painted cabinetry. Homeowners can choose from popular paint colors or explore custom color matching rather than being limited to a small group of predetermined finishes.

Want warm white? Deep green? Soft greige? Nearly black?

The color becomes part of the design instead of the wood species underneath it.

Custom Cabinetry Without Paying for Hidden Wood Grain

This is another reason we like MDF for Casa. If the goal is a painted finish, using paint-grade material allows us to put the emphasis where it belongs: the cabinetry design, door style, color, function and fit of the finished space.

Casa is still part of TRC's custom cabinetry offering. It uses frameless construction, offers custom sizing and modification options, and is built locally in Minnesota.

It's simply designed specifically for homeowners who want painted cabinetry.

Then Why Would Someone Choose Painted Hardwood?

Because there are situations where hardwood is still the right choice.

TRC's Signature Collection offers painted hardwood cabinetry in addition to stained hardwood. Signature also allows homeowners to combine painted and stained cabinetry within one custom design.

For painted hardwood, Maple is often our preferred choice.

Maple has a smooth, tight grain that creates a cleaner painted appearance than woods with more pronounced grain. It provides the strength and characteristics of hardwood while allowing the paint color to remain the focus.

Painted hardwood may make sense if you specifically prefer hardwood construction or if your overall Signature design combines painted cabinetry with stained wood and you want those materials coordinated within the same collection.

What About Custom Door Styles?

This is where the distinction between Casa and Signature becomes especially important at TRC.

Casa offers 12 paint-grade door styles designed to give homeowners plenty of options without making the selection process overwhelming. But sometimes someone wants a painted door profile that isn't part of Casa.

In that case, TRC can create a custom paint-grade MDF door through our Signature Collection . Any painted MDF door style outside of Casa's standard designs falls under Signature.

So choosing MDF doesn't necessarily mean you're limited to a standard door design.

MDF vs. Wood Isn't Really a Quality Question

This is probably the biggest misconception we'd like homeowners to leave behind.

The question shouldn't be: "Is MDF cheaper than real wood?"

A better question is: "Which material makes sense for the finish and cabinetry I want?"

If you want stained cabinetry that celebrates natural grain, variation and the character of real wood, we'd point you toward Signature or Luxe . Signature includes Maple, Alder, Cherry, Hickory and Red Oak, while Luxe features premium White Oak and Walnut.

If you want custom painted cabinetry with a smooth finish and plenty of color flexibility, Casa may make much more sense.

And if you want painted hardwood or greater customization in your door design, Signature gives us another route.

None of those choices is automatically "better." They're designed to accomplish different things.

What About Summit's Painted Cabinets?

Summit by TRC offers another option for homeowners who want painted cabinetry.

Unlike Casa and Signature, Summit is semi-custom and not custom-built in our shop . It offers a curated selection of cabinet sizes, door styles and finishes, including painted colors such as White Shaker, Dove, Castle Grey, Pebble, Sage, Charcoal, Pure and Naval.

Summit can be a great fit when faster lead times, value and a simpler selection process are priorities. Most Summit styles ship in approximately two weeks, with select Quick Ship options typically shipping within 5–7 business days.

The answer may not be the species at all. It may be how the Oak was sawn.

How the lumber is cut from the log can dramatically change the grain pattern you see on the finished cabinetry.

First, What Does "Sawn" Mean?

It sounds technical, but the basic idea is pretty simple.

When a log is milled into boards, it can be cut at different angles in relation to the tree's growth rings. Those different cutting methods expose the wood grain differently.

So while the tree hasn't changed, the part of its natural grain you see on the face of the board has.

That's why the same Oak species can have sweeping, curved grain on one cabinet door and much straighter, more uniform grain on another.

What Is Plain Sawn Oak?

Plain sawn, sometimes called flat sawn, is the most common method of cutting hardwood lumber. It produces more usable lumber from the log and generally allows for wider boards, making it the most cost-effective of the three methods.

What Does Plain Sawn Oak Look Like?

This is probably the Oak grain most people recognize.

Plain sawn Oak often has arching or cathedral-shaped grain patterns , along with areas of straighter grain. The result is plenty of visible movement and natural variation.

On cabinetry, that means the wood itself becomes a noticeable part of the design.

Consider plain sawn Oak if: you love obvious wood grain, natural movement and the classic character associated with Oak cabinetry.

What Is Quarter Sawn Oak?

Quarter sawing changes the orientation of the cut. The log is divided into quarters and then cut so the growth rings are more perpendicular to the face of the board.

This produces a straighter, more vertical and uniform grain pattern than plain sawn lumber. It also produces fewer and narrower boards from each log, making the process more involved and typically more expensive.

But Oak has another interesting characteristic when quarter sawn...

What Are the Flecks in Quarter Sawn Oak?

Those aren't imperfections.

Oak contains natural rays that can become much more visible when the lumber is quarter sawn, creating distinctive markings commonly called ray fleck . Both Red and White Oak can display these markings, although they can be especially pronounced in quarter-sawn White Oak.

For some homeowners, those flecks are exactly what makes quarter-sawn Oak beautiful. Others prefer a cleaner grain without them.

Consider quarter sawn Oak if: you like straighter grain but also appreciate distinctive natural figuring and character.

What Is Rift Sawn Oak?

Rift sawing is often the choice behind those Oak cabinets with the exceptionally clean, straight grain you see in contemporary cabinetry.

With rift sawing, the growth rings meet the face of the board at an angle that creates a very consistent vertical grain pattern. The process produces narrower boards and more waste than plain sawing, so rift-sawn lumber is more limited and typically comes at a premium.

What Does Rift Sawn Oak Look Like?

Think straight, linear and consistent.

Compared with plain sawn Oak's cathedral grain and quarter sawn Oak's visible ray fleck, rift sawn Oak tends to have less dramatic figuring across the face.

That makes the natural wood feel quieter without removing the beauty and texture of Oak.

Consider rift sawn Oak if: you're drawn to clean, straight grain and want the warmth of real wood with a more refined, consistent appearance.

Rift Sawn vs. Quarter Sawn Oak: Aren't They Basically the Same?

This is where homeowners can easily get confused because both can appear much straighter than plain sawn Oak.

The biggest visual distinction is often figure .

Quarter-sawn Oak can prominently expose the tree's natural rays, producing the flecking or figuring discussed above. Rift sawing creates the straighter grain while minimizing much of that prominent ray fleck.

So if the inspiration photos you've saved feature extremely straight-grained White Oak without much visible figuring, there's a good chance you're responding to the look associated with rift sawn White Oak , rather than simply White Oak in general.

Not necessarily.

Quarter- and rift-sawn boards do offer greater dimensional stability than plain-sawn boards, but properly prepared plain-sawn hardwood performs well in cabinetry, too.

Which grain pattern do you want to see every day?

If you love sweeping cathedral grain, choosing rift sawn simply because it sounds more premium would be the wrong choice.

Likewise, if every inspiration photo you've saved features clean, linear Oak, traditional plain sawn Oak may not give you the appearance you're picturing.

This is primarily a design decision , not a contest with one winner.

The cut of the lumber isn't the only thing affecting the finished appearance.

Overlay refers to how far the cabinet door extends beyond the cabinet opening.

The two most common choices are:

½-inch Partial Overlay (recommended for most projects)
1¼-inch Full Overlay

If you're replacing existing doors, matching your current overlay often creates the easiest transition.

Step 4: Calculate Your Final Door Sizes

Once you've measured each cabinet opening and selected your overlay, it's time to determine the finished size of your new doors.

For a Single Door

Every year brings new cabinet colors, wood species, hardware, and design trends.

There's nothing wrong with being inspired by them.

The mistake is allowing a trend to become the only reason you choose something you'll live with for years.

A natural wood kitchen may feel completely timeless in a home with warm woodwork and traditional architecture. Painted cabinetry may feel perfectly at home in a bright space with simpler lines.

With custom hardwood cabinetry, the wood species itself becomes an important design decision. Alder, Maple, Red Oak, Cherry, Hickory, Walnut, and White Oak each bring a different grain, color, and personality to a room.

Things to Consider With Natural Wood

Natural variation isn't a defect in hardwood cabinetry. It's part of the material.

Summit by TRC is our semi-custom collection. I t uses established cabinet sizes and a curated selection of door styles and finishes, which simplifies the selection process and can provide shorter lead times.

Neither approach is right for every project.

If your space requires unusual dimensions, extensive customization, or a very specific color or hardwood, one of our custom collections may make more sense. If your project works well within Summit's available sizes and selections, semi-custom cabinetry may provide everything you need without paying for customization you don't need.

Which Is Easier to Maintain?

Both painted and stained cabinetry are relatively easy to maintain with normal care.

Painted cabinetry may make fingerprints, grease, scratches, or small chips more visible depending on the color and lighting.

Stained cabinetry can sometimes disguise minor everyday wear because the grain and color variation provide visual texture.

After years of designing, building, and installing cabinetry throughout Minnesota and the Twin Cities area, we've learned that the best cabinet projects aren't necessarily the ones with the trendiest color, most expensive wood, or longest list of upgrades.

They're the ones that fit the home and the people who live there.

At Twin River Cabinets, we build custom cabinetry in our White Bear Lake shop and also offer semi-custom and cabinet door replacement options for projects that don't require fully custom cabinetry. That gives us a unique perspective: there isn't one type of cabinet that's right for every home.

These are some of the principles that guide the way we approach cabinetry and the recommendations we make to our customers.

1. Cabinetry Should Be Designed Around Real Life

A kitchen can photograph beautifully and still be frustrating to use.

Before thinking about door styles and colors, we want to understand how a household actually uses the space.

Where do groceries get unloaded? Where does clutter collect? Who cooks? Do multiple people use the kitchen at once? Which appliances stay on the countertop? What frustrates you about the current layout?

Those details can influence everything from drawer placement and cabinet sizes to pantry storage and appliance locations.

For one household, the answer might be oversized drawers for cookware. For another, it's hidden trash and recycling, an appliance garage, pantry organization, or a place for everything that currently ends up on the counter.

Good cabinetry shouldn't make you adapt to it. It should make everyday life easier.

2. More Storage Isn't Always Better Storage

One of the most common goals we hear is, “I need more storage.”

Sometimes you do. But often, the real problem isn't the amount of storage. It's that the existing storage doesn't work very well.

A deep cabinet where everything gets lost isn't necessarily more useful than a thoughtfully designed drawer. An oversized pantry isn't particularly helpful if half of it is difficult to reach.

That's why we think about usable storage , not simply how many cabinets can fit into a room.

Pull-outs, deep drawers, tray dividers, pantry organization, appliance storage, and cabinetry designed around specific household needs can sometimes improve functionality without increasing the room's footprint at all.

4. Custom Isn't Automatically the Right Answer

We build custom cabinetry. We believe deeply in its value.

But that doesn't mean every project needs it.

Our Casa, Signature, and Luxe collections are built locally at our White Bear Lake shop and allow greater flexibility in sizing, materials, finishes, and project-specific details.

For a kitchen with unusual dimensions, highly specific storage needs, a particular hardwood or custom color, or cabinetry that needs to integrate closely with the architecture of the home, that flexibility can be extremely valuable.

But some projects work perfectly well within established cabinet sizes and a curated selection of finishes. That's why we also offer Summit by TRC , our semi-custom collection.

And sometimes the existing cabinet boxes are still perfectly functional and the homeowner simply wants a different look. That's where Revive by TRC replacement doors and drawer fronts may make more sense.

We don't believe homeowners should pay for customization they don't need.

The best cabinetry isn't necessarily the most expensive option. It's the option that makes sense for the project.

5. The Parts You Don't Notice at First Matter

Cabinet doors and finishes naturally get most of the attention in a showroom.

But some of the things you'll appreciate most over the years aren't necessarily the things that catch your eye first.

Drawer construction matters.

Hardware matters.

How smoothly a drawer operates matters.

How cabinetry is constructed and assembled matters.

Some of the best cabinet design is almost invisible.

You walk into the room and it simply feels right.

The proportions make sense. Doors and drawers open comfortably. Appliances fit naturally into the layout. Storage is located where you need it. The cabinetry relates to the architecture of the home rather than fighting against it.

7. Trends Are Inspiration, Not Instructions

Cabinet trends change constantly.

One year everyone wants white kitchens. Then it's green. Then White Oak. Then warm stains. Then painted cabinetry is supposedly “out,” only to return again.

We pay attention to trends because they can introduce homeowners to new ideas, but we don't think they should make the final decision.

Cabinetry is too significant an investment to choose solely because something is popular online right now.

Instead, we look at the home itself, its architecture, the surrounding materials, the homeowner's personal style, and how long they plan to live with the space. If the current trend happens to fit all of those things, wonderful. If it doesn't, we'd rather help you create something you'll still love when the internet has moved on.

Beautiful cabinetry can still look wrong if it isn't installed properly. Walls aren't always straight. Floors aren't always level. Corners aren't always square—especially in existing homes.

Instead of removing the entire kitchen, Revive allows you to update the visible portions of the cabinetry while keeping the existing cabinet boxes.

Revive may be a good fit if:
